Corfu N.W. Coast

Northwest Coast
The dramatically beautiful northwest corner of this island is very green with forests interspersed by mountains, though side roads in this area can be rough on cars. A second Aghios Stephanos is found on this part of the coast, with a large bay that draws windsurfers, a resort with some rooms, tavernas and nightlife, though a low-key kind of place. To the south of it is the sandy bay at Arillas, with some hotels and tavernas, the village of Afionas, with a sandy beach, the long windsurfing beach at Aghios Yiorgos , below sheer cliffs, with some rooms, watersports centers, tavernas and discos; the attractive little village of Palaiokastritsa has three beaches, and is the most popular west coast resort on Corfu, though with very cold water. Excursion boats take visitors to sea caves and to nearby beaches; accommodation is plentiful. The ruined 13th century Byzantine fortress at Palaiakastritsa is north of town on the coast road 6 km, accessible only by path from the village of Krini or from Lakones, with panoramic views from the 300 meter cliff on which it is situated.
The drive to Lakones village from Palaiakasritsa passed through pine and cypress woods, with spectacular coastal views, which are to be enjoyed also from the village café; from Lakones mountain roads pass through the small villages of Horepiskopi, Valanion, and Nimfes. Theotokou Monastery, built in 1228 on a bluff above Palaiakastritsa, was remodeled during the 18th century in Rococco style. Its lovely gardens with fine views of the coast, and its museum, with jeweled Bibles, icons, and an olive press, make a visit worthwhile, free to the public, though one is expected to buy a candle sold by the priest. 7 am to 1 pm and 3-8 pm.
